LAGOS, Nigeria - The Islamist terror group Boko Haram have reportedly kidnapped at least 97 people in northeast Nigeria during a raid on villages in Borno State that left 28 men and boys dead.
The kidnappings occurred on Monday, but have taken several days to be reported due to inefficient communication between the local and national government that has been exacerbated by Boko Haram's destruction of mobile phone towers in the region.
Boko Haram gunmen reportedly also injured 25 others during the raid in which scores of homes were burned, local officials said, adding that those kidnapped were made up of men and boys.
Boko Haram in April kidnapped 276 girls from a boarding school are holding them hostage in an unknown location.
The Nigerian government has been powerless to prevent Boko Haram attacks and has been unable to find the girls, despite widespread national and international criticism.
The Boko Haram terror group raided Doron Baga, a farming and fishing village and surrounding villages on the shores of Lake Chad, which is located 110 miles north of the state capital, Maiduguri.
Boko Haram has been active in Nigeria since 2009 and has since then killed more than 100 Christian and Muslim people each week, despite attempts by the government to stop them. 'Boko Haram' translates from the local Hausa language as "western education is sin", they're trying to impose Sharia law across Nigeria.
Nigeria isn't the only country in which they're active, in July they kidnapped the wife of Cameroon's deputy prime minister in a dawn attack on his home village of Kolofata, north of the area where they also kidnapped a local chief and his family.
