SHENZEN, China - After shipping 189 million smartphones in 2020, Chinese tech manufacturer Huawei reportedly anticipates production will fall by some 60 per cent in 2021.
Media reports claim Huawei has notified suppliers that it would only order enough components to manufacture 70 to 80 million smartphones in 2021, reported Nikkei Asia.
Huawei shipped 240 million phones in 2019.
Huawei's decline in sales began after the United States refused to allow its phones to offer Google services. The US government also banned Huawei from importing US-made technology from non-US companies.
Currently, Huawei is preparing to launch its Mate X2 foldable phone next week. Its prospects don't look very promising because of the lack of Google services, but it could succeed in China due to it being Huawei's stronghold.
Plans by Huawei for 2021 include introducing the successor to its foldable smartphone, the Mate X2 on 22 February.
Huawei will also manufacture gaming notebooks, laptops and a gaming console, as it enters the gaming sector. Such a move would see Huawei competing with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
