Twelve people have been taken into custody in Limpopo in connection with alleged disability grant fraud and corruption.
The suspects, aged 31 to 59, were arrested in Tzaneen on Monday in a multi-disciplinary takedown operation by the Hawks, police and officials from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).
"It is alleged that between the period 2018 and 2019 the Sassa officials colluded with an intermediary to recruit non-qualified [sic] people in Tzaneen area to register for disability grants at a fee," Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke said.
Investigations revealed that at least 21 people were recruited. They paid R3 500 each.
"Consequently, the department suffered a loss of over R300 000 due to these illegal activities," Maluleke said.
The suspects include three Nkowankowa Sassa officials, one intermediary and eight people who do not qualify for Sassa grants. They were expected to appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate's Court soon on fraud and corruption charges.
"The investigation to search for other outstanding suspects continues," Maluleke added.
