TUNIS, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia has foiled three illegal immigration attempts to cross the Mediterranean to the Italian coast, the Tunisian Ministry of the Interior said Friday.
A statement released by the ministry said units of the Tunisian Maritime Guard have arrested 27 Tunisian illegal immigrants off the coast of Bizerte in northern Tunisia, and Nabeul coast in the northeast.
Large sums of money in foreign currencies have been seized during these operations.
According to official figures released Wednesday by the Tunisian Forum of Economic and Social Rights, 558 Tunisian illegal immigrants have arrived at the Italian coast since Jan. 1, 2021, compared with 94 in the same period of 2020.
Thousands of illegal immigrants attempt to cross the Mediterranean every year as Tunisia is one of the main points of access to Europe through irregular channels.
