KATHMANDU, Nepal - According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), Nepal has reported its first cases of African swine fever.
According to the OIE, six outbreaks of the virus were recorded among farm pigs in the region around Kathmandu, with 934 animals dying of the disease out of 1,364 infections, citing a Nepalese government report.
"Yes, the outbreak has been confirmed in Nepal," said Dr. Chandra Dhakal, information officer at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development. "We will hold a press conference on Friday to provide more information."
According to research, African swine fever is a highly contagious viral pig disease. The virus is spread by direct contact with infected pigs, wild boars, and ticks.
The virus can also survive in processed meat for several months and frozen carcasses for several years.
According to the OIE, the virus is "not a threat to human health," but it could have a devastating effect on the pig population.
