SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stocks in Asia traded higher on Thursday. The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo gained 21.70 points or 0.08 percent to 26,171.25.
China's Shanghai Composite did best, rising 52.95 points or 1.62 percent to 3,320.15.
In New Zealand, the S&P/NZX 50 climbed 135.23 points or 1.27 percent to 10,813.92.
The Australian All Ordinaries added 9.10 points or 0.14 percent to 6,691.40.
The Hang Seng in Hong Kong added 265.53 points or 1.26 percent to 21,273.87.
In South Korea, the Kospi Composite, going against the regional trend, fell 28.49 points or 1.22 percent to 2,314.32.
The U.S. dollar recovered from overnight losses, sending the euro back down to 1.0502, by the Sydney close Thursday.
The British pound fell to 1.2180. The Swiss franc eased to 0.9653.
The Canadian dollar was friendless at 1.2984. The Australian dollar weakened sharply to 0.6873. The New Zealand dollar dived to 0.6249.
Going against the trend, the Japanese yen made a modest gain to 135.44.
Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones retreated 47.12 points or 0.15 percent to 30,483.13.
The Nasdaq Composite dropped 16.22 points or 0.15 percent t to 11,053.08.
The Standard and Poor's 500 slipped 4.90 points or 0.13 percent to 3,759.89.
