NAIROBI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Friday launched an industry body that will boost the recycling of all non-hazardous packaging materials in the country.
Soipan Tuya, cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, told journalists in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi that the Packaging Producer Responsibility Organization (PAKPRO) will provide financial subsidies to waste collectors in order to accelerate the recycling of packaging materials made of plastics, aluminum and glass.
"This organization will help to shift our economy from a linear one where resources are taken, products are made and then waste generated is discarded, to a circular one where resources are kept in the value chain through reuse, recycling, waste minimization, leasing repairing and even refurbishing," Tuya said in a speech read on her behalf by Rodney Omari, senior assistant secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry.
Omari said the success of PAKPRO will not only benefit the environment but also contribute to the growth of Kenya's economy through employment creation.
He noted that PAKPRO, which represents importers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers of products that contain packaging, is keen to support waste collectors who are the backbone of Kenya's recycling industry, lamenting that waste collectors work in difficult and poor working conditions that have often led to their marginalization in society.
