LUSAKA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- As unemployment remains a challenge across many African countries, young people are turning to innovative ways to earn a living.

In the Zambian capital of Lusaka, bicycles are no longer just a means of transport but also a source of income, driven by the rise of online delivery services.

Through the Yango Delivery app or website, a ride-hailing and delivery platform, riders can sign up to take orders and get paid per delivery. The platform handles a wide variety of items, including food, flowers, household appliances, and parcels.

Among those finding success are 28-year-old Given Chanda and 20-year-old Nathan Mwansa, who have used their bicycles to build a steady livelihood and gain the economic freedom many young people long for.

Chanda, a father of two, has been working in the bicycle delivery business for about four months and is eager to share his experience.

"Being a parcel delivery man is a dream come true. I now earn more than twice what I used to make as a general worker," he said.

Chanda added that the job has not only given him a steady income but also a sense of purpose and fulfillment. "I have flexible working hours and no boss ordering me around," he said.

Mwansa, on the other hand, has been in the business for just a month but is already seeing the benefits. For years, he searched for a job, to no avail. After hearing about bicycle parcel delivery from his colleagues, he decided to give it a try.

"I no longer have to look for work. I am happy to use my bicycle to earn a living," he said.

When asked about their progress, both Chanda and Mwansa said the job enables them to pay rent, provide food for their families, and even set aside some savings.

One may wonder why these young men chose bicycles over other forms of transport, such as cars or motorcycles. The reason is simple: bicycles are cheaper to acquire and much easier to maintain.

"With a bicycle, I don't have to worry about costly fuel or high maintenance expenses," Mwansa explained.

Mwansa's response underscores that bicycles are particularly advantageous for young people who may not have the financial means to afford a motor vehicle, yet still wish to venture into the transport business.

Beyond being cost-effective, bicycles also stand out as one of the most eco-friendly modes of transportation. At a time of growing environmental concerns, using bicycles for delivery services represents a meaningful step toward sustainability.
